Second Wedding Fashion
Getting remarried? Wondering just what to wear? If you're like I was when I remarried, you're no longer a 26-year-old blushing bride looking for a size 6 Cinderella ball gown, complete with taffeta and puffy sleeves. Like me, you're probably a tad older, a bit more mature and have spent years developing your own individual sense of style. You want to find a dress that reflects that style and the woman you have become.
In choosing that special dress, you'll first want to decide on what type of wedding you'll be having. Is it going to be a traditional church wedding? Outdoors or in a garden setting? At a resort or country club? Or perhaps along a sandy beach at sunset? When you hold the ceremony will also dictate your attire. A Saturday night event calls for something more formal than, say a Sunday afternoon brunch.
Before you go shopping, take a look in your closet and think about the styles that work for you. Examine dresses, outfits, and colors that draw compliments from your friends and make you feel like a million dollars every time you wear them. You'll want to keep these in mind as you shop for your perfect dress.
Most encore brides tend to go with "simple, yet elegant" styles -- floor length evening sheaths, tailored cocktail suits trimmed with pearls or lace, ankle- and tea-length dresses with or without matching jackets, dressy pantsuits, or vintage dresses. Gowns that are cut on the bias, have A-lines, and feature high, draped or V-shaped necklines are some of the most slimming and trimming of styles.
Like many encore brides, you may be wondering if it's all right to wear white. Rest assured, it is perfectly appropriate. And last, there's the question of a veil. Is it appropriate for an encore bride to don a veil? Well, yes, except for the blusher veil, which falls in front of the face. This type of veil symbolizes virginity and remains reserved for the first-time bride. Other options, however, include decorative hair combs, headbands, tiaras, bun rings, and even hats.
There are many myths regarding what an encore bride should and shouldn't wear. Keep in mind that your encore wedding should be about you. Wear something you feel beautiful, comfortable and confident in. Let the real you shine through and you can't go wrong.

Beth Reed Ramirez, creator of Bride Again magazine (1998-2002) and editor of the new on-line version at www.brideagain.com, became a "bride again" when she remarried in 1996. Her own encore wedding took place on the 18th hole of a private country club and included her daughter and two stepchildren in the ceremony.
