Born in Melbourne, Australia the son of an accomplished seamstress in 1946, Richard Tyler began his career in fashion quite early, opening his first clothing boutique at age 18. In 1987 he met Lisa Trafficante, his wife and business partner, and together they founded Tyler Trafficante, Inc. The company launched their first collection of Richard Tyler for Men that fall. Richard Tyler for Women premiered in 1989, attracting a client list that included Julia Roberts, Anjelica Huston and Janet Jackson.
While continuing to design men's and women's fashions under his own label, Tyler also worked with other well known fashion houses. He was named designer for the Anne Klein Collection in 1993 and design director for Byblos in 1996. He launched shoe and sportswear collections for women before presenting the debut collection of Richard Tyler Bride in the Spring of 1999.
Richard Tyler has won numerous awards for his designs, including the Michelangelo Shoe Design Award and three consecutive CFDA awards, the American fashion industry's highest accolade.
