Yumi Katsura came of age immersed in the fashion industry. Her mother was one of the first career women in Japan, and the head of a fashion design school. Yumi attended the Ecole de Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne in Paris. As a young Japanese woman, she had never before seen the beautiful gowns Europeans had always known. Yumi was determined to narrow the gap between Eastern and Western bridal wear, uniting the tradition of Japanese weddings with the contemporary style of the West.
After successfully establishing her bridal fashion business in Japan, Yumi brought her collection west, where it was extremely well received. Some of the most exclusive stores in the United States, including Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, and Henri Bendel purchased her gowns.
Throughout her career Yumi has consistently refined her art. She has stunningly hybridized the traditional Japanese wedding gown with modern western fashion. Currently, a complete bridal collection is in the design stage; an entire array of amenities including shoes, bags, flowers, and even furniture, all pure Yumi Katsura.
