Never has a bride been more spoiled for choice. Despite a not-so-great economy (or perhaps because of it), designers seem to have collectively decided that this is the moment to bust out the big statements and they've all got a lot to say. From sexy satin-clad sirens channeling Jean Harlow (as seen at Elizabeth Fillmore's imaginative film noir-ish presentation) to hip waifs wafting down runways with their diaphanous gowns tied with belts (belts?!?!) of satin or ribbon, most notably seen at Vera Wang, the message this season is "Vive la différence!"

In a multitude of trends the strongest were vintage inspired. Focusing on the '20s, '40s, '50s and '60s, designers had models burning through the hottest looks in history, from flirty flapper dresses to sexy ballgowns made for dipping deep as Tony Bennett croons "Moon River." Ever the individualist, Erisa Katsura went waaaay back with gorgeous draped chiffon numbers fit for a Greek goddess.

Details make a big difference now. A lot of attention is being paid to accents that add some "zing," such as the aforementioned belts, sparkling brooches and lace-edged veils. Monique Lhuillier bumped up "zing" to "bling bling," pairing her saucy sheaths with serious diamonds for a show that was positively riveting.

Quieter statements included innovative designs with luxurious finishes, such as abstract appliqués (Angel Sanchez) and knitted cashmere (Vera Wang). Traditionalists have nothing to fear, though. Classic looks that shimmer and shine with tiny crystals or a touch of metallic lace graced a variety of runways, too, proving that, as the saying almost goes: Every bride is gonna be beautiful.
