The Best After-Dark Fun

An Evening Cruise Aboard the Calico (Montego Bay; [tel] 876/952-5860): This 55-foot wooden ketch sails from the Montego Bay waterfront. From Wednesday through Saturday, there is no better or more romantic way to spend an evening at Mo Bay than by taking this cruise. From 5 to 7pm, you sail into the sunset while enjoying drinks and the sound of reggae.

Time 'n' Place (Falmouth, east of Montego Bay; [tel] 876/954-4371): This is one of those places found only in Jamaica. A raffish beach bar, it is built of driftwood and looks as if it might blow away in the next hurricane. The setting is so authentic that many fashion magazines, including Vogue, have used it for background shots. The bartender makes the island's best daiquiris.

Rick's Cafe (Negril; [tel] 876/957-0380): At sundown in this popular South Coast resort, the gang meets at Rick's nightly to watch one of the most spectacular sunsets in the Caribbean. Still laid-back, the cafe is named for the old watering hole of Bogie's Casablanca. Ever had a papaya daiquiri? You can order that and dozens of other drinks in this bar that's been going strong since 1974.

Jamaic'N Me Crazy (Ocho Rios; [tel] 876/974-2201): The most popular club in this resort area, this hot spot has the best lighting and sound system not only in Ocho Rios, but perhaps on the island. Visiting yachties drop in for the fun, and at certain times of the year, especially in winter, the aura is virtually that of a New York club. Don't come here for an authentic Jamaican experience but for a good time instead.

The Turntable Club (Kingston; [tel] 876/924-0164): Since 1973, this battered, vintage nightclub has been going strong, maintaining its high energy level even to this day. The club evokes memories of Motown and the early years of reggae and still has great music.
